The Weminuche Loop is a classic 50 Mile horseshoe hike starting at Elk Park and ending at Needleton. This backpacking trip is near Silverton Colorado. This is a very rugged trail, and you should be able to hike 10 miles with elevation changes of 5000 feet up and down.

We will travel by van and stop in Kansas to spend the night at a campground. The next day we will travel to Durango Colorado and stay at a campground to acclimatize to the elevation. Durango is about 6,000 feet. The next day we will board the Narrow Gauge Steam Train which will take us to Elk Park and drop us off in the Weimnuche Wilderness area to start the trip. The plan is for five days and four nights. After our hike, we will catch the train back to Durango before heading home in the van. We will stop on the way at a campground, then make it back to Indiana.

The trip fee covers transportation in a rented van, camping fees, train fare and luggage fee for the train.

Participants provide their own meals on the trail. You will need to have cash or credit card for meals on the road.

Wisconsin has many bike trails throughout the state. I have selected 5 trails that are on the west side of the state. One trail in particular (Elroy to Sparta trail) is the first rail trail in the country. It’s noted for its woodland beauty and the three tunnels on the route. The Great River trail traverses the flat marshes along the Mississippi River. Birding is popular along this trail. The trails are mostly hard packed gravel. We will camp 6 nights and prepare breakfast and supper each day. The last night will be in a hotel with a visit to Taliesen (Frank Lloyd Wright’s home) the following day. Meals will be provided when we camp but meals are not provided while we are traveling by bike or car. You will be expected to share the hotel room with another person. The trip starts Saturday morning and returns the following Saturday.

The longest day is 39 miles and the shortest 20 miles. Total mileage over the 6 days is 172 miles or 29 miles/day. Terrain will be fairly level. Bikes and riders need to be in good condition. Helmets and front and rear lights are required. SAG support will be available but not immediate. A rider may choose to have a rest day if they desire.

Join us for 5 days of hiking on the North Country National Scenic Trail along the scenic Manistee River in the Northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Participants will receive credit for 50 of the 100 Miles for the North Country Trail hike challenge.   The hike is 5 days long with daily mileage of between 9 to 12 miles.  There are some large hills to climb but much of the trail follows the river.

After renting vehicles we will drive 6 hours from Indianapolis, camping near Fife Lake at a State Forest Campground. On the trail, we will average 10 miles a day, following the river mostly on a high bluff with scenic views.   Part of this route is known as the High Banks Rollways.  The Hike will end at the North end of the Manistee River Loop trail on Saturday September 13th

Three nights of camping will be in State Forest Campgrounds, one in a private primitive campground and there will be one night of dispersed camping.   Transportation is included with 2 rental vehicles.  All meals are the responsibility of the participant, but we will have an ordering option to buy a large quantity of meals.

There will likely be cell phone coverage for much of the hike, but as a precaution your trip leaders will have emergency communication devices.

Temperatures at that time of year should be pleasant with highs in the 60-70’s and overnight lows in the 50’s.  Overnight backpacking experience is required with daily mileage of 10 or more.

Tuesday, we meet our Bike Tour guides.to start the 140 miles on the Delaware & Lehigh Trail, also known as the D&L Rail Trail. This 4-day bike tour is a fully supported, Inn to Inn stay from Jim Thorpe to Washington Crossing.

    • Enjoy three of Pennsylvania’s award-winning small towns. From the mountains of Jim Thorpe, to the cobblestone streets of Bethlehem and onto the revolutionary architecture of New Hope. Each of these towns are well established tourism destinations and are as unique as they are attractive.
    • Travel through 57,600 acres/90 miles of State Park interrupted only by quaint river towns.
    • Explore some of the oldest history in the USA. Follow the route of Anthracite Coal from mine to market during the Industrial Revolution.

    Bike Tour Summary

Bike Day 1 (Tuesday) – 36 miles:  Start your adventure in the wilderness of the Lehigh Gorge State Park, riding past waterfalls and spotting wildlife as you bike on the newly connected D&L Rail Trail into the award-winning town of Jim Thorpe. Our first night is spent surrounded by the mountains in the Inn of Jim Thorpe, circa 1849.

Bike Day 2 (Wednesday) – 35 miles:  After a night exploring the shops, museums, and restaurants in Jim Thorpe, we’ll enjoy a hot breakfast at the Inn before we continue to follow the locks and canals along the Lehigh River to the town of Bethlehem, PA. Along the way, we will pass the Lehigh Gap Nature Center with its protected land. We will be afforded stunning views of the Blue Mountain and Appalachian Trail. Bethlehem, circa 1741, an old Moravian settlement, is home to cobblestone streets, quaint shops, and history around every bend. Spend the night in the Hotel Bethlehem where Presidents and dignitaries have stayed before you. Fun fact, The Hotel Bethlehem has just become the first hotel to be named USA Today’s Best Historic Hotel/Resort in America for the fourth straight year.

Bike Day 3 (Thursday) – 47 miles:  After a group breakfast, we will depart Bethlehem and travel south following the path of 19th-century aqueducts to the confluence of the Lehigh and Delaware Rivers. Take a minute to explore the confluence and the preserved lock that remains before leaving the Lehigh River behind and following the Delaware River into the Delaware Canal State Park.  Pass through many quaint river villages, until we arrive in New Hope. New Hope is a small town with a big city feel. It offers gourmet food and cultural attractions such as the Bucks County Playhouse.

The Kettle Moraine State Forest is in southeastern Wisconsin. The chief feature of the reserve is the Kettle Moraine, a highly glaciated area. The area contains very hilly terrain and glacial landforms, such as kettles, kames and eskers.  The Northern division is part of the Ice Age Trail – which winds through scenic areas of Wisconsin for 1000 miles. Our trip includes a three-day backpacking hike through 17 of those miles. In October, we should see some beautiful fall foliage and enjoy cool evenings perfect for sleeping.  For our three nights out, we will stay in open-sided shelters with benches for sleeping, so we will not need to carry a tent.  The terrain is easy to moderate to traverse, but hikers should be capable of carrying all their needed gear, plus shared group gear, for distances of 7+ miles per day.

Besides hiking, the main activity of this trip is cooking gourmet meals at the campsite.  Because we have low mileage days, we will have plenty of time to bake breakfasts such as biscuits and gravy and Dutch-oven French toast or dinners such as campsite nachos and chili with cornbread.  Of course there will be yummy desserts as well.  Each hiker will have a backpacker kitchen to prepare their individual meals.  Those who participated in the Laurel Highlands trip in 2024 will already have most of what is needed, others will pay an additional $52 for their kitchen equipment.  Meals will feature a meat and a veggie option.  Other food requirements, such as gluten-free, cannot be accommodated for this trip.

The fee for the trip includes transportation in rented vehicles, shelter fees, three breakfasts, three dinners and miscellaneous supplies.  Lunches, snacks, and meals in transit are the participant's responsibility.

Questions may be submitted to ciwcinfo@gmail.com.

All trip participants must fill out and submit a CIWC Medical Form  and Long Waiver Form.

Effective on all trips, there will be a $50 non refundable registration fee. This fee will be assessed to those who sign up for a trip, get on the roster and then later cancel. Even cancelling before the cancel date. Those who never make the active roster (i.e. those who stay on the waitlist) will NOT be charged the $50 cancellation fee.
