While considering your participation in CIWC trips, be aware that some trips will involve shared transportation, lodging, and other activities. Shades State Park has a 'backcountry camp site' that is perfect for a beginning overnight trip!

Trip Plan:

First order of the day will be to get acquainted and then do some light day hiking without back packs (but with a water bottle and snacks). We will Work on the 6-ravine challenge which you will get a nice sticker for upon completion. After our beginning hike, we will have lunch and get organized for our backcountry experience. Packs will be checked for proper fit and group items will be dispersed among the participants. That will consist of group meals, cooking and kitchen gear and some materials we’ll use in skills training, such as water filters. Everything we will need for overnight will be carried in over the 3.0-mile trail to the backcountry site.

Ticks have been bad this year, so If you don’t like to use hardcore insect repellent wear pants not shorts!

You will be expected to carry 3-5 pounds of additional group gear besides what’s in your pack. If club tents are needed those will be made available at this time, along with other gear you would like to borrow.

Group activity will consist of:

After camp set up there should be time for relaxation or area exploration before we begin supper preparation.

  • Tent site selection and set up.
  • Kitchen area set up.
  • Fire preparation,
  • water treatment,
  • camp duty sharing, and
  • general camp etiquette.

After Breakfast on Sunday, we will pack up camp and hike back to the parking lot. We will drop our packs and complete the rest of the 6-ravine challenge.

Meals:

Both Saturday Supper and Sunday Breakfast will be provided by the club as part of your fee. We will be preparing individual prepackaged meals. You will learn how to use stoves and other items.

Lunch on Saturday Is your responsibility so please bring it with you. Any other food is your personal responsibility and should be placed in a separate bag for securing against unwanted animal visitors. We will teach how to protect your food as part of the class.
