While considering your participation in CIWC trips, be aware that some trips will involve shared transportation, lodging, and other activities. A beginner backpacking trip overnight for one night in the backcountry camping area of Morgan Monroe State Forest. We will meet Saturday morning at 10:00 AM at a location to be announced. There, we will get organized, pass out any loaner gear, check backpacks, and distribute any common gear and food items. We will carpool to the parking area/trailhead within the state forest. From there we will backpack to our campsite approximately 1-2 miles and talk about how to select the best tent sites. We will work together to set up camp and have lunch. After lunch, we will take an afternoon hike of 2-4 miles (bring a small daypack or fanny pack for water and snacks) to explore the forest.

After returning from our hike, we will learn some basics of backpacking including trail etiquette, leave no trace, water filtration, fire starters, preparing meals and hanging food bags. We will work together to make dinner, and afterwards we may make a fire, explore more topics, and answer questions about the outdoors.

In the morning, we will prepare breakfast and break camp and backpack back to the trailhead.

Don’t have gear? No worries, CIWC has gear you can borrow: Tents, backpacks and other club gear such as stoves and water filters. Suggested gear lists and other information will be provided by your trip leader. Please bring your own sleeping bags and sleeping pads.

Dinner, Breakfast and an evening treat will be provided by the leaders. Dinner and breakfast will be from a selection of backpacking meals along with coffee/hot chocolate/tea. Participants will need to bring their own lunch and snacks. There will also be a shared responsibility for carrying the group food and equipment. Please leave some extra room in your backpacks for a few items. Leaders will provide trip details regarding meals, what to bring, and other information.

All trip participants will have the ability to hike 6 miles in hilly terrain. The trip will conclude late morning on Sunday.

All trip participants will be expected to submit a medical form, sign a waiver and complete emergency information documents prior to participation.

All trip participants must fill out and submit a

CIWC Medical Form and Long Waiver Form.
