Description:

Rationale: Over the last few years both State and Federal Authorities have seen an increase in fire abuse on public lands and in fire incidents. This reality and concern is driving the need for having this class.

Therefore, this is a Beginning Fire Class, targeting newer Members who want to learn some basics. Topics will include:

  • Fire Uses,
  • Safety
  • Preparation
  • Starting,
  • Maintaining
  • Extinguishing
Also, we will cover two types of fires, stewardship (Leave No Trace ethics) of when to have a fire and when not to.

Fire types will be limited to: Cooking Fires and Fires for Warmth / Social uses.

Participants will learn how to prepare an area for a fire, how to gather materials, how to build and ignite a fire, how to maintain and how to extinguish.

We will discuss the reality of Regulations concerning when and when not to have a fire and the associated safety and stewardship aspects.

If participants can bring a sharp knife (fixed blade) it will be helpful but not absolutely necessary. We will work in teams. At the end of the class, you will walk away with a small fire kit that you can take on your trips.

Participants will need to bring and simple lunch and be prepared for a short Day Hike of about 3 miles to become familiar with some of the features of Mounds State Park. Entry to the park in not included in your $20.00 fee, so you will also need to be responsible for that. Park entry fee is $7.00 per an in state vehicle and $9.00 for an out of state vehicle or you can use an Annual Pass.

We encourage you to stick around afterwards and explore Mounds State Park together!
