We are going to take advantage of lake effect snow in the Muskegon, MI area and go cross country skiing. There may also be possible options to snowshoe and to ice skate. The plan is to leave the Indianapolis area about 4:00 PM in the club van on Friday, Jan 17 and drive to Muskegon, Michigan with a dinner stop in the way. We’ll stay in a hotel. After a free breakfast in the hotel on Saturday morning we’ll then head to the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex for a full day and evening of winter activities. www.msports.org

The complex (within a Michigan State Park) contains a variety of trails from easy to advanced and supports both skate and classical style skiing. Each separate activity (XC ski, ice skate and snowshoe) requires a day pass ($10 each) and daily equipment rental is available ($8 each). There is also a luge but it requires advance reservation - fee is $49.  These fees are the individual’s responsibility and it is permissible to bring your own equipment. Participants should dress for below freezing temperatures.  There is a nice lodge that serves as a warming area with a concession stand and is available for snacks or a simple lunch.

We’ll probably opt to leave the complex for supper in town (nearby) and return for night skiing which is available up until 9:45 PM. After a second night in the hotel and breakfast we’ll head back home on Sunday with a likely lunch stop on the way.

The complex is suited for beginner, intermediate and advanced skiing. The beginner trails are on gentle terrain and are packed and groomed. There are 5 different trails with distances from 2K to 5K. Three (3) of the trails allow night skiing and are lighted. Here is a useful https://www.rei.com/learn/c/cross-country-skiing

After you register you will be given additional suggestions on what to bring.

Questions may be submitted to ciwcinfo@gmail.com

We’ve chosen the Muskegon area because there is a better chance of having suitable snow there than compared to areas further south and just over the state line. However, if there is a warm period and the snow conditions are unacceptable the trip will be rescheduled for the backup date.  If conditions are unacceptable for the backup date the trip will be cancelled by CIWC.

The trip price includes travel in the club van, 2 nights in a hotel (2-3 per room) and admission to the State Park. The hotel where we are staying offers a free breakfast.  The participant is responsible for all other meals, the snow activity day pass(es) and equipment rental.

All trip participants must fill out and submit a CIWC Medical Form  and Long Waiver Form.

Effective on all 2019 trips, there will be a $50 nonrefundable registration fee. This fee will be assessed to those who sign up for a trip, get on the roster and then later cancel, even cancelling before the cancel date. Those who never make the roster (i.e. who stay on the waitlist) will not be charged the fee.
