Policy on Fitness Self-Assessment
Level 1: Applies to trips in which we carry only day packs and stay on maintained trails. Hiking distances range from 3-6 mile, and elevation gain can be as much as 2000 feet. You should be comfortable hiking 3-6 miles in a day with considerable gain/loss on good trails.
Level 2: Primarily applies to trips in which we carry only day packs. In one day, we can hike up to 9 miles and 4500 feet of elevation gain on maintained trails, or up to 7 miles and 2000 feet of elevation gain on more rugged, less-maintained trails. For a Level 2 trip you should be comfortable hiking 6-8 miles in a day in hilly or mountainous terrain with a light day pack. If a backpacking trip has a Level 2 rating, it means the distances are 2-4 miles with little elevation gain/loss.
Group Size: 20/8 Maximum/Minimum

Come spend a summer weekend in Brown County State Park and get in over 16 miles of hilly terrain that will help you build your fitness level and enjoy one of Indiana’s most beautiful places.
Friday night –
Arrival and set up camp at the Rally Group Campground. If time allows, complete Trail 10 and climb the fire tower for an expansive view of the Brown County Hills.
Saturday – Hills and Hollows
Set off early, before the heat builds, for a 9+ mile hike up and down the hills on parts of Trails 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9 including the “stair-master” After arriving back at camp we can clean up (showers available) and head over to Big Woods Distillery for dinner.
Sunday – Lasso the Lakes
Another early start to hike around Ogle and Strahl Lakes and points in between for a total of about 6 miles. There are plenty of elevation gains and losses as we enjoy the shoreside trails. After breaking camp, we’ll head over to Abe Martin Lodge for the buffet breakfast.
Bring your camping set up, a full backpack to carry on the trail, dinner for Friday night (or eat before you come), trail lunches/snacks, a musical instrument (as desired), and other entertainment – cornhole anyone? Coffee and tea with oatmeal mixes will be available each morning for breakfast. Trip fee covers camping, two breakfasts and firewood. Entrance to park is $7.00 per vehicle unless you have park pass. Carpooling to the location is recommended. You’ll also pay for meals at Big Woods and Abe Martin Lodge.
