Completing the 140 mile Knobstone

Many may not be aware that there is an organization in Indiana, the Hoosier Hikers Council (HHC), which not only maintains many trails throughout Southern Indiana, but whose mission is also to complete a 140-mile trail through the beautiful hills of Southern Indiana. Already in place are the 42-mile Tecumseh that starts just south of Martinsville, and the 45-mile Knobstone, which starts only 15 miles north of Louisville. The HHC is in the process of completing the missing link, the "Pioneer Trail," the section which will hook these two existing trails up to make 140 contiguous hiking miles in Indiana! Join us for this presentation by HHC founding director Suzanne Mitthenthal as we hear the status of this project, along with the interesting stories of friendships, travels, networking, negotiations, and other activities that are an integral part of the acquisition of land and easements necessary for such an endeavor. Also featured will be a short video that shows the making of a 62-ft suspension bridge over Delaney Creek, in the new KT Pioneer section, which was constructed by a small crew from HHC, whose ingenuity, resourcefulness, and persistence lead to its successful completion, with a budget of $1500 and the use of almost no power tools or machinery.

Thru-Hiking The Long Trail... ...through Vermont

The Long Trail follows the ridge of the Green Mountains 273 miles from the VT-MA border to Canada. It is the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the United States and served as the inspiration for the Appalachian Trail which coincides with the first 100 miles of The Long Trail in southern Vermont. Plan to bring a friend and join us to hear more about The Long Trail as well as stories and pictures from our 2007 thru-hike of this beautiful, remote trail!
