Did you ever wonder how the Central Indiana Wilderness Club got started? In 2012 CIWC is celebrating its 30-year anniversary as a not for profit club. But, are you aware that our roots come from a "for-profit" business? Who's idea was that? What did the business actually do? How did the club actually form and what was it like in those early days? How is today's club similar and how is it different? What types of trips did they take? Come to our meeting on February 8 to learn the history of our very unique organization. Long-time member, past officer, board member and trip leader Linda Elliott will tell this fascinating story. You won't want to miss this one.

February 17-26, 2012, Quiet Sports Expo, Boat Sport and Travel Show

Location: Indiana State Fairgrounds, Indianapolis, IN

Quiet Sports The time is drawing near for the start of the third annual Quiet Sports Expo. The Central Indiana Wilderness Club is excited to play an active role in this event and hope that each of you will participate.

During the show, there will be a large booth designed to host outdoor organizations and give them a place to talk to the public and pass out information. We will staff our corner of this booth to share with the public and can even sign up new members! This chance to reach out to the public will provide an invaluable opportunity to showcase our amazing organization. By volunteering for 2-3 hour sessions, you will have a chance to interact with the public and share your love for the out-of-doors. As a volunteer, you will receive a daily pass to the QSE event and free parking.

A second volunteer/educational opportunity comes in the form of 20-30 minute small stage presentations, which take place over the course of the 10-day event. With the diverse range of quiet sports that each of you feel passionate about, this is a chance for you to educate event goers about your special topic. At the Christmas party, we compiled a tentative list of interested presenters. To solidify your presentation plans you will be hearing from Bob Hart and/or Mark Kaley (QSE organizer), MKaley035@Renfroproductions.com soon. If you want to be added to the presenter list, please contact Bob Hart as soon as possible.

With these two volunteer opportunities, you might consider tying them together by scheduling them on the same day. Just imagine a full day of hanging out and mingling with like-minded people? Check out the show schedule at: www.quietsportsexpo.com.

When you go to the show web site you will see that Rob Kesselring is one of the main speakers for the 10-day expo. His expertise is in canoe adventures, arctic and BWCA exploration, workshops and seminars, and much more. CIWC has been instrumental in bringing Rob to Indy and feel strongly about your benefit from interacting with him. Check out his info at: www.robkesselring.com. On his web site you will find bio and canoe trip opportunities. Here is another fun link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TrMB36teeQ to the video clip we watched at the Christmas party.

Another notable event taking place at the expo for 2012 include a Monday focus on scouting. The plan is to offer stations around the show floor that focus on scout skills. Be sure and tell your scouts about this event. It would be awesome to have an extra strong presence on this day so we hope many of you will make plans to be at the show on Monday, Presidents' Day. (CIWC is working to obtain club T-shirts which we can all wear during the Expo. This will enhance our visibility as a group).

Leave No Trace is a national and international program designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts with their decisions about how to reduce their impacts when they hike, camp, picnic, snowshoe, run, bike, hunt, paddle, ride horses, fish, ski or climb. The program strives to educate all those who enjoy the outdoors about the nature of their recreational impacts as well as techniques to prevent and minimize such impacts. Leave No Trace is best understood as an educational and ethical program, not as a set of rules and regulations.

The program is based on seven core principals; Plan Ahead and Prepare | Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces | Dispose of Waste Properly | Leave What You Find | Minimize Campfire Impacts | Respect Wildlife | Be Considerate of Other Visitors
